Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr has reportedly agreed to a $35 million contract, extending his stay with the team for two more years, The Guardian reported.
The new deal will make Kerr the highest-paid head coach in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA), with an annual salary of $17.5 million.
Kerr is coaching the Warriors for their 10th season his contract with the team is about to end, yet he has not been in a hurry to sign any contracts, focusing solely on the current basketball season.
He always made it clear that he intended to return but never rushed to make any decisions.
The 58-year-old Kerr, who coached Golden State to four titles with a star-studded team that included Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson, recently won his 500th game.
Kerr has stated several times that he is not worried about starting this season without a contract for 2024–25 and beyond, notably during the USA Basketball camp last summer.
He will coach the US team at the Paris Olympics this summer and has announced not continue in the role for the next four-year Olympic cycle.
After coaching the Warriors to the 2015 title for the franchise’s first championship in 40 years, Kerr took a leave of absence early in the next season after suffering debilitating complications from a pair of back surgeries.
Top assistant Luke Walton coached in his absence.
